What is Movember? Everything you need to know.

Movember, or the month formerly known as November, is the time of the year when men and women all over the world come together to raise awareness and funds for men’s health causes. This noteworthy cause broke the mould for innovative, impactful and, most importantly, fun campaigns that encouraged scores of people to help change the face of men’s health.

Here is a quick look at the origins, the rules to participate and some common myths about Movember.

What is Movember?

Movember is the brainchild of two friends in Melbourne, Australia in 2003.

What began as a means to resurrect the humble moustache as a fashionable face accessory while raising funds for a good cause (prostate cancer), soon snowballed into a global initiative with a mission to ‘Stop men dying too young’. The Movember foundation currently supports and funds studies and charities dedicated to the causes of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

According to the official numbers from the Movember Foundation, they have raised over $850 million with over 5 million participants across 21 countries. They have funded around 1200 men’s health projects around the world.

How can you participate?

The Movember foundation puts out clear rules of participation that have been summarised below:

1. Grow a Mo

The first step is to Register for Movember. The rules clearly state that all participants (or Mo bros) must start the month of Movember with a clean shaved face (or a blank canvas, if you will). You can then go on to grow a moustache or a ‘mo’ of your choice.

During the month, let your moustache become the ribbon for men’s health issues. With your magnificent stache as a conversation starter, strike up discussions on men’s health issues. Encouraging those around you to open up about issues they face, no matter how small they may be, is an important part of the fundamentals of Movember.

Mo bros around the world take the cause to the next level by getting creative with their moustaches and spearheading fund raising for worthy causes. Don’t just grow it alone, get your friends and family to join you.

2. Donate

Another way to support the cause is to donate directly to the Movember foundation or to encourage others to do so as well. All the funds go to funding men’s health initiatives around the world. Details can be found on the official Movember Foundation website.

3. Move for Movember

The Movember campaign also champions getting physically active for longer, healthier lives. The Move Challenge encourages people to get moving for yourself or for a cause. Run a marathon, cycle to work, take up a sport. Do this with friends and family with the aim of getting active together.

4. Host an Event

Sign up and get together with your pals and make some noise for Movember. Whether you choose to host a dinner party, a poker night or just some good old-fashioned fun with a karaoke machine, let your Movember flag fly free.

Movember Myths

1. Movember and No-Shave November are the same cause

It is common to see these terms used interchangeably. We often see this on social media with people lumping the two together in order to cover their hashtag bases. Although both causes highlight facial hair for a good cause, their fundamentals are significantly different.

2. Only men can participate in Movember

This is completely untrue. Women are actively encouraged to champion the cause by getting the men in their lives to participate in Movember. The term ‘Mo Sistas’ was coined to represent the numerous women who join the men in spreading awareness and getting active during the month.

3. Any kind of facial hair works

The rules clearly state that the you start with a clean shave and go on to cultivate a moustache. No beards or goatees are allowed.
