What is Zit/Acne?
Acne/Zit knows no bounds when it comes to age, but it can be treated. So, despite your age, if you magically wake up with a face full of pimples one day, don’t let it get you down. Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, and sebum (your skin’s natural oil). It tends to appear as whiteheads, blackheads or pimples and can pop-up anywhere on the face, scalp, chest, and back. It is among the most common skin problems in men and women, affecting about 25% of men and 50% of women at some point in their adult lives.

Are zits caused by not washing your face enough?
Not necessarily. In fact, in some cases, scrubbing too hard or excessively can aggravate your acne. A gentle cleanser can help nourish your skin. As for the toning part, using alcohol-based astringents can dry out the skin so that’s another flag there. Acne is also triggered by hormones. And while gentle, regular cleansing with soap and warm water can sometimes help with minor breakouts, your shoddier acne requires proper care. If you think your skin’s getting out of hands, it would be better to consult a dermatologist.
Does it matter what you eat?
"You are what you eat!" But in this case, it’s certainly not as easy to spot. Experts are still looking to prove a connection between the food you consume and later the pimples that pop up. Having said that, one thing’s for certain, "Poor nutrition may make acne-prone teens even more susceptible to breakouts," pronounces Ava Shamban, MD, a Beverly Hills, Calif.
And while we know it's important to remember that your skin can reflect your overall health, it is equally important to judge whether a nutritious diet can actually help you become both healthy on the as well as on the outside.

What ingredients should I look for in an acne treatment and why?
Salicylic acid, for one, is one of the most commonly found ingredient in many anti-acne treatments. Quite effective too. Salicylic acid helps reduce acne by minimizing swelling and redness and clearing blocked skin pores to allow pimples to shrink. The anti-inflammatory properties of salicylic acid shouldn’t be surprising, given that salicylic acid is a derived form of one of the most well-known anti-inflammatory drugs available—aspirin! A few other ingredients that are good for combatting acne are aloe vera, tea tree extracts, and neem. Beside this, you should look out for paraben & sulphate free cleansers for healthier skin.
